Before you report a fire there are some things to keep in mind. Make sure you are in a safe location, don't approach the fire or put yourself or first responders in harm’s way. While wildfire reporting and dispatch processes vary by location, providing information like: where you think the fire is located; people, livestock, or property you have seen in the area; or smoke director or color can helpful to the responding agency.

Not only will ensuring your gun is properly maintained improve your accuracy, but it will decrease the likelihood that an unintended shot will hit a rock or dry grass and spark a wildfire. Campfires are allowed in established and dispersed campsites, however there are many ways to make your campfire safe. Fire pits should have a rock or earthen ring and no fuel within 20 feet. Checking your spark arrestors and tire pressure; preventing dragging chains, and other general car maintenance can decrease the risks of sparks from your vehicle igniting a fire. Whether you are going shooting or having a campfire, bring a shovel, water, and a fire extinguisher with you. Use water and a shovel to stir the ash into your campfire, and make sure it is cool to the touch before you leave.

Winnemucca, Nev. – Increased fuels due to the wet winter and spring, drying vegetation, high fuel loading, and increasing daytime temperatures have prompted the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Winnemucca District, Battle Mountain District, and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Santa Rosa Ranger District to announce the implementation of fire restrictions on all lands under their jurisdiction in northern Nevada effective Thursday, July 13th, at 12:01 a.m. and lasting until further notice. These restrictions are in addition to the current statewide shooting closure.

The wet winter and spring made for denser fine fuels this summer throughout northern Nevada. The combination of these fine fuels and exposure to human-caused ignitions, creates a potentially dangerous situation for firefighters, the public, property, and our natural resources.

“With our heavy fuel loading and increased fire activity, going into fire restrictions is an important step to preventing unwanted fires and protecting our natural resources.” says Brock Uhlig, Acting Fire Management Officer for the Desert Basin Zone.

To report a fire, call Central Nevada Interagency Dispatch Center at 775-623-1555, or dial 911.

Fire restrictions prohibit the following:

Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire (using wood, charcoal or any other material), campfire, or stove fire except a portable stove using gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel outside of a developed campground or picnic area (except by permit). Charcoal burns longer and hotter than wood and may appear to be cold; however, embers can linger for hours.

Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or at a developed campground or picnic area.

Operating vehicles or other motorized equipment off of existing paved, gravel, or dirt roads.

Welding or operating an acetylene torch with open flames, except by permit.

Using, or causing to be used, any explosive, except by permit.

Possession or use of fireworks (always prohibited) or any other incendiary device.

Use of tracer rounds, steel-core ammunition, or exploding targets, including Binary Explosive Targets while recreational shooting.

Affected areas include the following:

BLM – All areas, roads and trails on the BLM-Winnemucca District (except for the Water Canyon recreation site). All areas, roads and trails on the BLM-Battle Mountain District.

USFS – All areas, roads, and trails within the Santa Rosa Ranger District except within Lye Creek campground located east of U.S. Route 95 and north of Nevada State Route 290. The district is located northwest of Paradise Valley and east of the towns of Orovada and McDermitt.

“We want our users to be able to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family,” said Joseph Garrotto, Santa Rosa District Ranger. “However, it is important that during times of heightened fire danger that everyone who uses public lands recreate responsibly and be careful with fire.”

As fire season continues the BLM and USFS will be aggressively citing those who do not comply with the posted restrictions and those who use or possess fireworks. Violation of these prohibitions on BLM-managed land is subject to punishment by a fine of not more than $10,000 or imprisonment for not more than six months or both, as Class B misdemeanors under federal law (agency statutes vary). Violators found guilty of having a fire during restrictions on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest could receive a maximum fine of $5,000 or six months in jail or both. Persons may also be responsible for resource damage, suppression costs, and any injuries that occur if they are found liable for causing a wildfire.

For more information or clarification on the restrictions, please contact the BLM-Winnemucca District Office at 775-623-1500, USFS Santa Rosa Ranger District at 775-289-5025 ext. 4.
The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of America’s public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. In Fiscal Year 2016, the BLM generated $4.1 billion in receipts from activities occurring on public lands.

Temporary Shooting Restriction Goes Into Effect on the Carson Ranger District

Carson City, Nevada (June 29, 2017) - Due to the risk of wildfires, the Carson Ranger District will be instituting a temporary shooting restriction. This restriction will go into effect on Friday, June 30, and remain in effect until Saturday, Sept. 30 or until conditions change.

The Carson Ranger District encompasses over 400,000 acres on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in the states of Nevada (136,232 acres) and California (270,208 acres). The District includes 330,000 acres of urban interface area west of Reno-Sparks Metropolitan Area (pop. 425,417), Carson City (pop. 54,080), Minden (pop. 3,001), and Gardnerville (pop. 5,656) in Nevada and more remote rural areas in eastern California

The District experienced an extremely wet winter, leading to higher-than-normal grass growth. In addition, the current stretch of hot weather has increased the fire danger by drying the grasses and elevating the risk for human-caused fires.
“This temporary shooting restriction will prohibit people who are not hunting from discharging firearms on the Carson Ranger District,” said District Ranger Irene Davidson. “The main purpose of this order is to enhance public safety and protect natural resources while the District’s fire conditions are at a dangerous level as evidenced by the recent rash of shooting-related fires.”
Fire Restrictions in Western Nevada to Begin June 30

Due to the historic wet winter and spring, drying vegetation, increasing daytime temperatures, and several human-caused fires the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District Office; the Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF), Western Region; the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), Western Nevada Agency; and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge Complex announce the implementation of fire restrictions on all lands under their jurisdiction effective Friday, June 30, at 12:01 a.m. and lasting until further notice.

Vegetation in western Nevada and eastern California is significantly more then we have seen in previous years (including 2016) because of the wet winter and spring. Warmer than average temperatures have increased the rate of vegetation dry-out. A large crop of grass and brush is evident at lower elevations and trees and other forest vegetation at higher elevations is quickly drying out. People are encouraged to safely enjoy the public lands, bearing in mind that human-caused fires threaten human life, private property, and public land resources every summer.

The potential for devastating fires during the summer is very real. Report fires to the Sierra Front Interagency Fire Dispatch Center, Minden, Nevada, 775-883-5995, or dial 911.

Fire restrictions prohibit the following:
1. Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire (using wood, charcoal or any other material), campfire, or stove fire except a portable stove using gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel outside of a developed fee campground or picnic area (except by permit).
2. Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or at a developed campground or picnic area.
3. Operating vehicles or other motorized equipment off of existing paved, gravel, or dirt roads.
4. Welding or operating an acetylene torch with open flames, except by permit.
5. Using, or causing to be used, any explosive, except by permit.
6. Possession or use of fireworks or any other incendiary device.
7. Use of tracer rounds (always prohibited), steel-core ammunition, or exploding targets, including Binary Explosive Targets while recreational shooting.

In addition, the NDF prohibits operating vehicles or equipment traveling on or using wildland areas without at least an axe, shovel and one gallon of water. All agencies recommend that individuals carry cell phones while in the wildlands or national forests to report wildfires.

As a reminder, the following safety tips should be followed while target shooting:

Refrain from shooting during hot, dry and windy conditions.

Don’t use incendiary or tracer ammo – Incendiary and tracer ammo are always prohibited on public lands.

Place your targets on dirt or gravel areas clear of vegetation and avoid shooting into rocky areas. Placing a target in dry grass increases the risk of fire.

Be aware that all types of ammunition can start fires under the right conditions, especially steel core ammunition.

Bring a container of water. This may seem obvious, but shooters often fail to bring enough water to put a fire out. A five gallon bucket of water readily available while shooting could prevent a disaster if a fire does start.

Bring a shovel. Use the shovel to dig a trench around your targets before shooting to ensure that any fire caused by sparks can be easily contained.

Shoot at quality steel targets designed to minimize risks to both the shooter and the environment. For steel targets to be functional and safe, they should be made of high quality through hardened steel that has a Brinell hardness number of at least 500.

Don’t shoot trash. Trash like old couches and TVs can often be found illegally dumped on public land but can be dangerous fire hazards when shot.

Please shoot responsibly and clean up after shooting.

Affected areas include the following:

BLM – All areas, roads and trails on the BLM-Carson City District outside of developed recreation sites with the exception of Sand Mountain Recreation Area

NDF – All areas, roads and trails on state lands including the following state parks: Lake Tahoe Nevada, Washoe Lake, Berlin-Ichthyosaur, Rye Patch State Recreation Area, the Carson River Ranches portion of Ft. Churchill, and Dayton in western Nevada.

BIA – All lands administered by the BIA located within or adjacent to the BLM NV Carson City District. Approximately 300 allotments encompassing 59,310 acres in Douglas County, Nevada, within the Carson Watershed that the U.S. Government (BIA) holds in trust for hundreds of individual Indian landowners, collectively known as the Pine Nut Allotments.

USFWS – All areas, roads and trails within the boundaries of the Stillwater, Anaho Island, and Fallon National Wildlife Refuges. Campfires are prohibited on these refuge lands year-round.

As fire season continues the BLM, NDF, BIA, and USFWS will be aggressively citing those who do not comply with the posted restrictions. Violation of these prohibitions is subject to punishment by a fine and/or imprisonment (agency statutes vary). Persons may also be responsible for resource damage, suppression costs, and any injuries that occur if they are found liable for causing a wildfire.

For more information or clarification on the restrictions, please contact the BLM-Carson City District Office at 775-885-6000, the NDF at 775-684-2500; the BIA at 775-887-3500; and the USFWS at 775-423-5128.
One good way to help prevent wildfires is by maintaining
spark arrestors in your off road vehicles. All internal combustion engines
create carbon particles as a by-product of burning gas. Spark arrestors catch
carbon particles before they can leave your vehicle and start a fire. Modifying
or removing a spark arrestor will cause the machine to not function properly
and could start a wildfire.

Non-native grass growth is 200-300% above average across much of Northern

All of the above average moisture
that Nevada received this year has increased grass growth. Once the climate heats up during hotter months, the grass becomes a fire accelerant.

Here are some quick tips to avoid
starting a wildfire by parking on dry grass:

Park
only in designated, rocky or paved areas as hot exhaust systems can ignite dry
grass.

Park
in areas that are free of anything that can catch on fire.

Often overshadowed by these benefits, a dangerous condition emerges. Large swaths of invasive grasses help fuel extreme fire potential.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13208794332513343614noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3360084171364305661.post-2160390350582260632016-08-08T17:32:00.000-07:002016-08-08T17:32:31.339-07:00Current Nevada Fire Map Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13208794332513343614noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3360084171364305661.post-21521473079960078702016-08-08T15:37:00.001-07:002016-08-08T15:42:43.130-07:00We're taking aim at preventing wildfires.
